it ended with a trip to the hospital. now, police are trying to determine what caused the car to crash into their school bus. >> closed roads block a short stretch of route 155 to drivers in havre de grace this morning. sky eye chopper 13 scant captured the damage from above. on the ground, harford county sheriff's sheriff's officers try to make sense of the mangled mess. >> right now, deputies are reconstructing the scene of the accident too early in the investigation. >> reporter: early reports show the driver of the gray car lost control of the vehicle. crossed over the double line and hit the school bus. it was carrying six students to meadowville elementary. but the bus driver lost control. slammed into the suv. and flipped over on its side. medics rushed the suv driver to shock trauma. >> minutes after 8:00, alex heard the sirens rushing to his neighborhood. he believed the foggy weather conditions may have played a part.

>> you get a morning like this. you never know. >> you see the bus toppled. and smoke coming out of the suv. >> reporter: the neighbors sent michelle varner a picture of the wreck on her cell phone. her oldest daughter had just left for the day, on a county bus, headed for a different school. >> my first thought was, well, whoases fault was it? it's kind of scary to think you put your child on a bus, and it could have been something the bus driver could have done that made that happen. police say while it is still early on, the driver of that bus was not at fault. and it is early. they say that drugs and alcohol did not play a part in this accident. they are still trying to determine exactly what caused the driver of that vehicle to lose control of it. in havre de grace, i'm gigi barnett. >> the children and the bus driver were treated at an area hospital and released. fall in full swing, but sure doesn't feel like it. the hot and uncomfortable weather lingers out there. live look outside now with sky eye chopper 13.

we actually almost set a new, hot-weather record. wjz is live with first warning weather. bob turk is tracking the high temperatures for us. bob? >> cooling rain. might see some next week. for the time being, just a hot afternoon. and a hot evening. but it's going to be a lot cooler this weekend. take a look at these numbers. today, we tied the record that was set back in 1970. that was 95 degrees. and that's where we are this afternoon. got to 95. the average high is only 76. average low is only 53. so far today, 95, 70. but i promise you, by the weekend, much cooler temperatures. there we go. 1970. by the way, yesterday in 1970, it was 98 degrees. so that was the hot year. and this year, well, i guarantee, when you see much cooler temperatures. this may be the last 90-degree day we say this year. hopefully. >> all right, bob. thank you. a bizarre crash in whitemarsh leaves a woman dead.

tonight, police say they know what led up to the accident. skysky eye chopper 13 over the scene of the parking lot in whitemarsh mall. police say yesterday, a 22-year- old woman was caught shoplifting inside ika. workers in the store took her name and then released her. moments later, the woman got into her car and ran it into a light pole in the -- sears parking lot. police dubbed him the preppy burglar. he was caught breaking into a howard county home. he could be responsible for other crimes. denise is in the newsroom with the developments. known for wearing a suit and tie, while breaking into a howard county home. jeremy hall is now linked to a burglary in montgomery county. surveillance cameras caught hall. he allegedly took a sony boom box in a safe. but was quickly arrested from someone who knew him. hall was released on bail in howard county, before being

arrested again. this time by montgomery county police. investigators found evidence linking to a home. police are now trying to determine if hall played a role in other burglaries in the area. a college campus dedicates an entire day to improving campus safety and preventing violence. it happened five months after the death of baltimore native yeardley love. >> yeardley love grew up in cockeysville and was weeks away from graduating uva. when police say her ex- boyfriend attacked and killed herself -- her inside her off- campus apartment. >> beautiful young woman who had everything going for herself. there's no reason she shouldn't be here. >> yeardley love's death impacted students so greatly that they did a day of dialogue, featuring discussions, a resource fair and a public art project, called lines of darkness and light that veiled the historic

rotunda. today, marks the introduction of a student-led initiative to train students and faculty to better see signs of trouble or obuse. friends of yeardley love say they knew the couple was arguing and had several intense fights the day before love died. it was also revealed that huguely had problems with anger. >> george huguely also had a previous arrest. the school didn't know about it. so now they have a policy that students have to reveal if they have had a previous arrest. police are asking for your help. the robbery happened just before noon yesterday at the sandy spring bank in the 8300 block of veterans highway. according to investigators, this man entered the bank, passed a note to a teller, demanding money. then fled with cash. he was last seen running away

from the bank. anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact authorities at 410-222-3469. they are insects that have all of maryland talking. stink bugs are poppingun in and around homes. but they are not just a nuisance. they have serious effects on area farmers. mike schuh has more on the stink bug invasion. mike? >> well, imagine you're a farmer. and you spent all year growing 100 acres of apples. and just when they about ready to be harvested, these guys show up. millions of them. and they're hungry. from here, dwight bartera apple trees are heavy and beautiful with fruit. >> we have a beautiful crop. these are pruned right, thinned right. the crop is perfect. the sugar is going to be great. >> a million and a half apples go to stores to his market. and some get you picked.

one she's worn before, jailhouse orange. >> she's going to go through the same physical and mental evaluation. she'll be housed as a keepa way because of the celeb -- keepa way because of the celebrity status. >> lohan was ordered back to jail, after she violated her probation. she will remain there until a probation revocation hearing on october 22nd. >> legal analysts believe judge eldon fox was sending lohan a message. wake up. this is your last chance. get sober and fix your life. that's why he didn't allow her bail. >> reporter: no bail means she won't be released early like last time because of jail overcrowding. while lohan had admitted her mistake on twitter, it appeared the immediate go-to-jail ruling surprised everyone. >> i don't think anyone in that courtroom, from the observers in the courtroom to lindsay lohan's lawyer, was expecting the judge was going to remand her. >> her mom dena was in court,

it's a nice day. >> if you like hot, summer weather. >> i like hot, summer weather. >> if this day had been back in july, it would have been not so bad. but in mid-september, it's extremely unusual. we tied the record at 95. and that's what we were last hour. we dropped a tad to 94. look at that. d.c. still at 97. whoa. 97 at hagerstown. 81 ocean city. and 79 in oakland. tomorrow, in oakland, it will probably only be in the 60s. for highs. it is a lot cooler air headed our way over the next 24 hours. a new air mass comes in.

unfortunately, doesn't look like we'll see some showers. it's a very, very dry front. that got the heat in here. all of the hot temperatures down on the southwest. they were just transported up through our region. get up to about central northern new england. and that's sort of a boundary line between the hot stuff and the cooler air to the north. that's why they have showers up there. also to the west, look at that front. showing up so clearly this morning. and a lot of shower activity with it. but as it moved through the day, in the overnight last night, during the day today. almost nothing left. just dries up right now in ohio. there may be a widely scattered shower in garrett county late tonight. the front should be in and out of the city and through the area, around noontime tomorrow. and once that happens, winds go back to the northwest. and yes, it will start cooling down. tomorrow, ahead of the front. close to the front. we'll probably get into maybe the mid-80s again. low to mid-80s. but not in the 90s. front comes through.

and much cooler air for sunday. maybe rain across southern virginia by sunday afternoon or night. hopefully get some rain in here sunday night into monday. temperatures sunday. probably no higher than 70 degrees. believe it or not. quick look at the tropics. it will continue to weaken as it stays over the land. that's a good thing for the gulf of mexico. we will see days of heavy, drenching rains and no doubt, mudslides and floods for those folks in central america, nicaragua, honduras, and perhaps central portions of mexico as well. disturbed weather down here. and some of the models still predicting that something can develop by next week. and perhaps in the gulf of mexico. or in the caribbean. keep watching that area. small craft advisory, tomorrow. west winds, 10 to 15. and gusts to 20. they'll be drying things up. could be a nice, breezy afternoon.

baltimore has something in store to make your next visit more interesting. whether you're visiting, working or living in downtown, it's what you don't see that concerns those who are dedicated to making the cities hot. nothing is worth looking at in these vacant windows. it calls street level vibrancy. which translates into something interesting to buy. something fun to do. something good to eat. things bright and shiny. fun and refreshing. eye candy. >> a nice, to few restaurant. -- tofu restaurant. maybe something for the kids. >> i would. especially a holistic grocery store or an all-natural grocery store. >> like because -- i like the things -- the jeaners place. and they're not there no more. so i would like that.

>> the operation store front allows them to operate. people with ideas to try them out in some of the spaces here. will put up 10,000. and allow them to operate with the approval of the landlord. they're not necessarily looking to lease out that space. but they're still kind of a drag on the neighborhood because of these dark, empty store fronts. so we'd be willing to work with them to say, hey, can you do a temporary lease? six months? a year? can you swing that. >> reporter: the information sessions are october 4th and 7th. so if setting up shop downtown is something you've been thinking about for a long, long time, better hurry up. reporting from charles street, i'm pat warren. back to you on television hill. to contact the downtown partnership for details of the plan, proposals have to be submitted by november 22nd. a florida bank teller, abducted by armed men from his

home. it was one part of an elaborate heist. >> the suspected robbers allegedly strapped a bomb to the teller's chest and forced him to rob a bank of america. the three suspects put a bomb on the teller, took him to his home near the bank of america branch near the university of miami. then used him to steal steal an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing. investigators are trying to determine if he was a victim or had a role in the crime. during the robbery, three local schools were put on lockdown in the university of miami sent out a campus wide alert, warning students and staff to avoid that area. there's a long tradition in washington, inviting movie and television stars to testify in hearings, in order to get more coverage. comedian steven colbert was the house attraction. joel brown explains to wjz why he was there. >> reporter: the hearing room

cuts suspended for all americans. tonight, some relief for small business owners. congressmen passed their health company. it will ease credit and help expand and hire new workers. part of the job's agenda president obama promoted last year. and investor warren buffett is speaking out today against the announcements that the recession is over. buffet disagrees with a recession panel that says the recession ended more than a year ago. buffet says the nation will pull out of its economic slump but not for a while. tonight in healthwatch, new information about reducing the risk of breast cancer. a study finds moderate, routine activity around the home or office, appears to offer some protection against invasive breast cancer. that is compirred to women who spent more of their day just sitting or watching tv. also in healthwatch tonight, prostate cancer affects some 200,000 men in america each year. to help reduce that staggering

number, the great prostate challenge event will take place again this sunday. an effort to save lives by raising awareness about the disease. the numbers ever staggering. between 40,000 and 50,000 men in the u.s. die each year from prostate cancer. prostate cancer forms on the prostate, a reproductive gland on men. >> my attitude was one that i was not going to allow that to beat me. >> reporter: to combat the disease, chesapeake urology challenge will take place at towson university, sunday, september 26th. and wjz is a proud sponsor. >> it is a nice fundraiser, where all of the proceeds end up going for prostate cancer. >> when james alley discovered he had prostate cancer in 2007, he became proactive about his treatment. >> in the end, what i did after talking to everyone, i opted for the radiation treatment and the implant.

>> it's generally something that people just get. only about 10% are passed down through the generations. about 90% of people who are diagnosed with prostate cancer have no history of prostate cancer. an all-star lineup of baltimore colts fans. some say they are encouraged by the data that shows with f caught early, prostate cancer can be cured. >> the objective is to come out and be screened with a simple test as a physical examination and a blood test called a psa test. we can find prostate cancer earlier on people. giving them a higher chance of cure. and as we said, the great prostate cancer challenge is this second. it's part of the continuing community commitment. marty bass will watch this this sunday.

wisconsin. swing sets are out of commission, while pumps work full time to drain the flooded property. the city of arcadia is about 100 miles southeast of minneapolis. a lot of people are amazed by the volume of water we've seen. floodwaters surged through downtown, roads collapsed into craters. and roe boats became the best form of transportation. city officials are keeping a worried eye on bulging rivers. >> right now, it's extremely high. >> minnesota is also in a thunderstorms brought almost five inches of rain. jeff dub has lived in the area for 14 years and says he's used to the weather. but this time is different. >> when it gets to a certain point. then you start worrying.
